Marina Khan

From looks to talent and brains,to smartness, poise and versatility she had all this and more from day one which helped her have a great head start for her carrier on TV,
The first time viewers saw MARINA KHAN it was a small role in a play which was a tribute to shaheed RASHID MINHAS, They were taken back! and when I say taken back I mean they were really taken back ..More then her pretty looks it was her confidence level that made her presence more notable ..Her role in the play was quite serious infact more then the few dialogues that she had to utter it was her facial expressions that did most of the good work.. A lil while after that impressive debut came the prize winning role of SANYA that worked like magic for her,
she was offered to act in HASINA MOINS TANHAYAN in 1985,
now imagine, working in Hasina jees dramas is itself a huge applause and recognition for a new comer, right,
and then on top, if you have talent as well, wow man, then think like this ..
YOU GOT IT 👍🏼
I don’t have to put into many words,
we all saw the kind of precision she
put forward in the character of SANYA
It was done with so much ease and flawless ness that not even once it looked like she was acting on the screen,
Every one just loved that shararti Sanya along with her pink panther ..
In 1987 we saw she was back again with a bang in yet another HASINA jees hit series called DHOOP KINAREY
Under the master direction of SAHIRA KAZMI this time, Marina showed her versatile style as DR ZOYA opposite the ever so handsome RAHAT KAZMI , and as per her RIVAYAT the viewers loved her again.
After TANHAYAN we saw MARINA in a number of drama serials like ,
💥KOHAR,💥NIJAAD,💥PAROSI💥
💥TUM SEY HO KEHNA💥TANHA
💥BEWAFIAN💥KHALI HATH💥
💥EHSAS💥KAISEY KAHOON
💥 JACKSON HIGHTS💥QAID
💥KHAIF E BAHARAN💥NOOR UL AIN
💥DIL KIA KAHEY💥CHEEKH
💥BANDISH💥GUSTAKH ISHQ..
💥FARAR AMA ABA AUR ALI.
( Not) surprisingly MARINA did not curtail herself for only younger roles she didn’t mind opting to be seen older then her age group, Plus she didn’t even mind doing special appearances in some plays (just so to grace the plays) which also proves the humbleness in her nature.
Doing better and better and achieving more in the process made MARINA go towards the line of direction and production side by side her first live acting Those of you who have seen her those famous “BARAAT”sequels namely ..💥AZAR💥DOLLY💥TAKAY and ANI KI AI GI BARAAT,can certainly vouch for her to be quite a success behind the screen as well .
And as if all this was not enough MARINA decided to stretch her hand further, this time she ventured into films, Cine viewers saw her in couple a good movies like,
MEHREEN JABAR’s 💥LALA BEGUM,
A cameo appearance in,💥PUNJAB NAHI JAON GI,plus in💥NAMOOM AFRAD 2,and 💥PARVAZ HAI JANON.
Currently MARINA is residing in KARACHI,she is working as a representative for WORLD WILD LIFE FUNDING (WWF)…and I am sure there is more up in her sleeve than all this .☺️
A recipient of LUX STYLE AWARDS ,at the age of only 57 she is full of life and ambitions besides looking quite ravishing indeed.
We wish her all the best in her present and future endeavors.
And from all of us here it is,
We love you MARNIA KHAN.. ❤️
We r anxiously waiting for your next appearance on TV.

Manzoor Qureshi

By Ms. Anjum Khan

KhanAnjumSmPhoto

His sweet coy shy smile has never left his side .. even after all these years MANZOOR QURESHI still retains that charm and that elegant persona which has always been part of his graceful personality . As one of the senior actors ( work wise) of our television he is still seen actively performing on the mini screen The producers love to cast him cause they know the kind of rolls fit him like a hand in glove are only his domain.
Right from KIRAN KAHANI in 1973 he managed to hit off by his charming good looks and performance,
especially with the female fans who instantly fell head over heals in love with the dashing young doctor on the screen cause where on one hand we had the loud and fiery ROOHI BANO
as the lead actress we had MANZOOR QURESHI holding the reigns of the series on the other hand with his soft romantic and sweet mannerisms .. No one can forget the scenes of Dr Salman with Miss Aashi ,To this day I feel those were one of the finest and the sweetest most romantic scenes filmed on Pakistan television.
In ANIE KI AI GI BARAAT”(2012) a comedy drama series and a sequel to other “Baraat” series by Marina khan and Nadeem Baig) the younger generation supposedly try to fix up their Naani with this middle age handsome but a lil heavy on the scale guy, the results are super hilarious but MANZOOR.Q.proved to the audience that he can be very comfortable in doing comedy and plus he still has that charm in him even after all these years
We can by all means call MANZOOR QURESHI a versatile actor,
Some of his hit drama series include
💥KIRAN KAHANI💥KOHAR
💥AYE ZINDAGI💥ZID
💥PIYA MAN BHAYE
💥ZINDAGI TUM HO💥KHOYA KHOYA CHAAND💥HALKI SI KHALISH
💥SHAB E ZINDAGI💥MERI DULHAN
💥BAND BAJEY GA
💥UFF YEH MOHABBAT ..
and lot more.
Only in his late 50s now (59 to be exact )We wish him all the best in health and happiness now and also in the years to follow and hope to keep seeing him in many many more drama series in the making.
To sum it up I would like to say again ,
artists who have managed to retain their style, grace and caliber,Manzoor Qureshi sahab you belong in that top rankers list even to this day.😊
Ps: just learnt from Manzoor sahab himself that Ma sha Allah He is 70 years old., unbelievable isn’t it !!

The Infant Days of Pakistan TV

By
Ms,. Anjum Khan
KhanAnjumSmPhoto

Many many many moons ago Who remembers when we used to sit in front of the square box ( im)patiently staring at this weird logo showing on the screen while bearing with this sad and kinda irritating to the ears tune every evening till the clock would strike six and ..
TV SHUROO HOGAYA! ka Nara lug
jata ..People would especially put Daryan on the floor to accommodate children and some adult ladies as well from the neighborhood who did not have this privilege than .Those were the good times when people had more empathy and care for others, the whole neighborhood was treated as one big extended family and ofcourse the care
was mutual .
Those were PTVs infant days.
Viewers were not demanding at all,
they enjoyed every bit shown on the screen ..koi shikayat nahi key “hai Kia bakwas programs hai .. iski acting achi nahi .. Maza nahi areha “ Yeh woh .. No nothing like that .
Jo dikhaya jata chup chap achey bacho ki trah daikh laitey woh bhi khushi khushi ..
Monday’s ko tv ki chuti huwa kerti
thi .. jee han for real..! Viewers didn’t like that they missed their new found entertainment.
Mangal Budh ko gosht ka naga aur Peer ko ..Tv ka naga.kaisi baat haina .
That was the life then,
Little did people know that this was just the begening , There would be a time in the near future where they will have hundreds of channels and thousands of Programs to choose from any day any time.. Just Imagine if they only knew all this then, they would have gone crazy with excitement right !☺️
Tariq Aziz has the feather in his cap to be the first announcer ever for the newly born channal ,along with Kanwal Neseer they both did an outstanding job at it, doing LIVE TV was not an easy task .. one lil mistake and you r done ..it could not be deleted or re shot. The style of these announcers, their body language , the way they sat ,had their hands put on top of each other other and that dheema dheema soft lehjha..was all very formal.
Ajkal key bachey don’t know that Ptv’s transmision from 1964 to 1976 was all Black& White ..Even when color transmision started It didn’t become so common over night ,very few had it then,In the 80s it was seen more as a essential commodity in the house.
Coming back to PTVs early days ,
Some of its top dramas in black and white that cross my mind are:-
LAKHON MEI TEEN, JHOK SAYAL
( Peer Saeen ana I tay mithey chol khana ai) GHORA GHANS KHATA HAI,
KHUDA KI BASTI, ALIF NOON TALEEM E BALGHAN,HAPPY EID MUBARAK , ( I think that was a long play )
SHEHZORI, QURBATAIN AUR FASLEY MIRZA GHALIB BUNDER ROAD PER, (another long play) KIRAN KAHANI ,ZAIR ZABAR PAISH, even UNCLE URFI was black and white.
Other prominant shows that my mind can rake off from my memory bank are:-KASUTI, GHAR TU BURA NA MAANEY,SHEESHAY KA GHAR NEELAM GHAR , ( yes it was there at that time too ☺️) ZIA MOIN UD DIN SHOW ,HARTAAN HAI DEEPAK, SUCH GUP,There were music programs that showed various famous artists
singing songs I think one of them was called SUNDAY KEY SUNDAY,
Later on For kids there was Farooq Qaisers Kalyan which was enjoyed by young and old simultaneously till its last show and Ofcourse s there was Sohail Rana Jee’s series of music programs,
KALION KI MALA , HUM HI HUM,SATH SURON KI DUNYA,
HUM SURAJ CHAND SITAREY ..
These programs were ardently viewed and cherished by us the kids of yester years.
One program that never changed its time and was always prompt at 9:00 pm was KHABAR NAMA..
The news anchors just like the announcers also had their typical
style of reading News for which I hear they were specialy trained.
PTV has the honor of showing some of the best English films of its times.
I have already done an whole article on all the hit English film series of yester years so I ain’t gonna go that side.
Who remembers when the jhalkian of
“NAI SEHMAI” were shown on Ptv
How we used to love it !!
Aur kia kia yaad kerwaoon…
No matter how far we have come now
We still love to watch these old movies and old tv shows and dramas .. and that’s a fact ..sochney ki baat hai .. Akhir aisa kia hai un sub mei .. jo ab nahi hai..🙁.. I know .. puraney programs key sath juri huwe hamari bohat si purani yadain ..

Cardinal Gracias

CardinalGracias1914

A group photo from St Patrick’s School in 1914. The child sitting in the front row second from left was born on 23rd October 1900 in Karachi. Six years prior to this picture, he had lost his father and was being brought up by his mother. This brilliant ecclesiastic had a number of ‘firsts’ to his credit. He was the first Indian to be appointed Bishop Auxiliary of Bombay, the first to be made Archbishop and the first to be created Cardinal. Many years later, he returned to make his first visit to Karachi in October 1953. High government officials and members of the diplomatic corps joined Catholics at Karachi in giving a warm welcome to the first native of Karachi to become a Cardinal. It was the first visit of His Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, to his birthplace since he received the Cardinal’s hat earlier that year. On hand to welcome the Cardinal were Abdur Rashid, acting Governor-General of Pakistan, Archbishop Alcuin van Miltenburg, O.F.M., of Karachi, and the Indian High Commissioner. The Governor General gave a luncheon in the Cardinal’s honour.

Sahira Kazmi: Loaded to the Brim With Talent

By Anjum Khan

KhanAnjumSmPhoto

A man works from Dawn to Dusk and a women’s job never ends or it seems aisey mei to be able to excel in both fronts (job and ghar) and even make a respectable name in it with your hard work and talent .. well that’s not an easy feat We have innumerable Pakistani women in different fields of life including show biz holding the reigns of both fronts and balancing it pretty well !
One such lady that I admire in show biz is “SAHIRA KAZMI”When ever I think of a picture of an ideal Pakistani women somehow Sahira Kazmi’s face comes in my mind and pray why not .. she has what it takes to be on that caliber ..
To begin with she is educated ,
she has beautiful looks (with lustrous hair and good heights as an added attraction to her personality.😊)
She is loaded to the brim with talent and brains No wonder she treaded on all three venues, acting , directing and being a producer with equal ease.
She has in her cap many successful tv drama series which will be remembered by the tv viewers till they live.
You know it’s not easy for a woman to mark a name in the man’s world Sometimes she has to work on the double to prove her self… And Sahira Kazmi did the same and her work speaks volumes.
As we know She started her acting carrier on TV in the early 70s from the famous drama series “Qurbatain aur Fasley”as female lead against non other than her future hubby to be ,the very handsome and talented “Rahat Kazmi, later the charming duo worked in another great hit “Parchayan” followed by another huge hit “ Teesra kinara”
Viewers went berserk over these drama series The couple (by than married) looked so cute together , their looks and chemistry complemented each other ☺️) These plays were adoption of famous foreign novels so it was also
like a wiff of fresh air and a little break from the typical story lines depicted in our dramas for the viewers than.
Being at the peak of TV female actors at that time didn’t stop Sahira from stopping her acting and venturing into something much more harder and challenging,She successfully went behind the cameras and directed some Memorable (with a capital M )TV
series for us .. who can ever forget
💥Dhop Kinarey 💥Rozi💥Ahat
💥Zaib un Nisa💥Zikar hai Kai sal ka
💥Tapish💥Khaleej 💥Anch
💥Hawa ki beti 💥Nijaat.and some more single plays in between.😊
Sahira also has this tag of being “bold” to her credit in the sense that she is not afraid to pin point the taboos in our maashra through her dramas.
While “Hawa ki beti” was about women’s rights and their imaging in Pakistan, “Ahat” and “Zaib un Nisa”told and educate us on the importance of family planning and to stop blaming the poor women and that …it’s okay to have daughters only.
Kudos to Sahira to boldly go where non other thought to venture.👍🏼 i would say even if one family watching these dramas changed their thinking .. Her job at it is a tremendous success,
And I am sure this must have served as a food for thought for many many many viewers… and that’s Sahira, she likes to go beyond the conventional box to have her word across That’s why she never hasitated to highlight the socio-economic conditions and inequality in our society… She also likes to experiment new things like she for the first time tried outdoor shooting for songs. Her famous “Watan ki Mitti gawa rehna”sung by “Nayara Noor” is so innovative yet such a simple and beautiful master piece I’d say .. using kids painting the Pakistani flag along with Nayara Noors sweet vocals
behind serves as a treat to watch it every time.☺️
In 2007 Sahira was eventually given her rightfully deserved “ Pride of Performance Award ”(which I think was pretty late but then, better late than never)
Sahira as we know has two good looking and talented kids “Nida and Ali kazmi”who ofcourse have sparks of talent from both their parents side in their genes…while Hawa ki beti was Nidas debut acting play The very handsome Ali Kazmi we have seen in so many innumerable dramas and films He is really good at acting,If u have seen his work you will vouch for that too.😊
Remember the saying “The fruit does not fall from the tree☺️
We love you Sahira 💕.. and we miss your work. please give us more memorable tv plays if possible.
Ps . Rahat Kazmi Jee I haven’t forgotten you sir .. you deserve a separate article which will duly be done soon.😊

Kala Chapra: Again

KALA CHAPRA – AGAIN:

A NEW HANGAR

Crowds witnessed the erection today of the first piece of steel of the structural work for the new airship hangar at Karachi.

AIRSHIP ROUTE TO INDIA 1928

The great airship shed which has been completed at Karachi by Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., for the Empire Airship Services to India. Its dimensions, 850 ft in length, 180 ft in breadth, and 170 ft in height, place it among the world’s largest buildings. It will be used next autumn.

Cleaning My City, Not a Big Deal

Cleaning my city, not a big deal!

By Menin Rodrigues

CleanKarachiMenin

September 10, 2019 – Federal committees, provincial governments, the municipal
corporation, the mayor’s antics – are all cock and bull stories! Karachi, my beleaguered
city does not need any of these lofty imaginary protocols, loud-talking groups and
photo-hungry people who don’t really understand Karachi, period.
Why? Because none, presumably, have any affinity with, and ownership or awareness of
this once secular, beautiful and peaceful city! Its economic muscle, access to air-
sea and land routes, geo-political physical features, ethnic and cultural
diversity, historical landmarks and architecture, endless kilometers of
sandy beaches, wide thoroughfares, sprawling parks, huge stormwater
drains and a traffic quagmire, are its hallmarks!
To say that each of these traits of Karachi has been destroyed and abused, relegating the
city to its lowest ebb, would have said the least. Citizens are now at the mercy of a
messiah.
The proverbial “roshnio ka sheher” is a nomenclature, all big cities have lots of
lights. It was never about lights – it was about its people, founding fathers and
conscientious municipal councilors, who are truly the makers of ‘modern’ Karachi.
They built a city with a vision, a city to last beyond 100 years, all we had to
do was to inherit this gift of benevolence and preserve its beauty while at the same time,

plan and design the Karachi of the future – for generations to come. This was not done.
Unfortunately, today’s generation has inherited a rot.
There’s no point in replicating or reincarnating the past, let Karachi’s treasures be where
they stand, just preserve for posterity, but go beyond. “Up town and Downtown”
signages to impress burger-clans, mean nothing, the physical features are the same!
Cleaning the beaches with a few bag-loads of garbage from a designated area along the
seaside are PR stunts. Karachi’s coastline/beaches stretch 90 kilometers! Who
will take on this challenge?
Surely, the then and now status of Karachi has changed dramatically, so much that in
many respects, Karachi’s magnificent past is dwarfed or drowned by the city’s
exponential growth, which unfortunately is its checkered present! More like, the
sorry tale of two cities – the past and the present.
Empty vessels make the most noise. Karachi and all those who stake claim to do
something good for the city, have met the same fate – failure! This may seem a
pessimistic viewpoint but it’s a reality check because nothing in the city gets better, only
worsens. Change cannot come so easily, it cannot happen overnight, no magic wand or
the trumpeted ‘cleanliness drives’ can change its destiny, therefore, like it or not,
citizens will continue to suffer, and Karachi my beloved will be torn between her
‘loveless’ paramours!
Promises after promises, so-called cleanliness drives and fake projections of how good
the city is, are like calls in the wilderness. Tall claims and promises to bring sanity to the
people of Karachi are purely political hallucinations, weightless statements, stop-gap
arrangements and certainly worthless opinions. These shenanigans cannot
produce any result to make Karachi, what we yearn for it to become,
peaceful, clean, green and beautiful.
From time to time, efforts are made to clean the city and rid the city of illegal
settlements, permits for additional bus routes are given, roads are laid over roads, and
repaired with inferior quality of raw material – it doesn’t last long. It looks good for a
brief period and crumbles within the year. Due to poor governance, there is no upkeep
and continuing maintenance, and therefore, before you know, it’s back to square one.
Stand at any traffic junction, crossroad and major intersection, and lo and behold, you
have Pakistan! The way we are, far from where we were, and where we ought to be! But
let’s focus on Karachi. Given the fact that the city has grown ten-folds, both in
infrastructure and population, in as much the staggering number of vehicles on the
road, solving Karachi’s problems may be in the hands of its political stalwarts but

certainly not a responsibility they can handle – for they have failed to date. There
must be an alternate solution.
Surf through the social media domains and you will find countless Karachi pages,
endless debates and nostalgic reminisces of the past. It’s a good thing, recalling
‘beautiful memories’ of their growing up in the city. But unfortunately, it has no bearing
whatsoever on the young and energetic youth of the city who look at Karachi’s future
from a different perspective! They would rather build on what they want the city to be in
the next two decades. Tirades and tirades on what Karachi used to be is
material for the museum, it is the past and must remain in the past,
therefore, we ought to visualize Karachi from a futuristic point of view.
Instead of cleanup operations, 90-day deadlines and garbage collection plans, why not
look at Karachi 10-20 years down the line, draw the plans, create timelines and seek
educational outcomes, such as introducing compulsory subjects like CITY-LIVING and
CHARACTER BUILDING in school-curriculums. The key to Karachi’s future is a
generation of educated people with exemplary character and a practical
knowledge of city-living to lead its citizens and achieve common goals.
Therefore, cleaning my city is no big deal. The mandate of ‘how’ to do, and ‘who’ is
responsible and ‘when’ it can be done, is all in the ‘standard operations procedures’ on
‘how to clean the city’ in the books of the Karachi Municipal Corporation.

A PIA Accomplishment 1962

KhanNurPIA1962Tag

A PIA ACCOMPLISHMENT 1962: Capt. Abdullah Baig and Capt. Mirza Taimur Baig welcomed with garlands at Karachi Airport after completing speed record breaking flight from London to Karachi on January 2, 1962 with PIA’s brand new Boeing 720-040B (AP-AMG) on its delivery flight. PIA’s dynamic Managing Director Malik Nur Khan is also seen in this photo; Photo courtesy of M.T. Baig Family Collection.

Mohammad Syed Husain The winds were favourable for the flight. They encountered a jet stream which helped them along (tailwind). A jet stream is/are band(s) of air circling the Earth where the troposphere meets the stratosphere, about 35,000 feet at the equator and around 29,000 feet at the poles. This area is known as the tropopause. The temperature falls with height in the troposphere whereas it remain constant in the stratosphere at minus 56.5 Celsius. This variation in temperature sets up these bands of air whose velocities may exceed 100 mph at a conservative estimate. They must have had a good weather briefing on departure because they also carried a French representative of the Aeronatique International (FAI). So the speed record attempt was planned. I think the time was 6 hours and 53 minutes and some seconds. The record still stands.

Maula Baksh and Harold Meik

MAULA BAKSH AND CAPTAIN HAROLD MEIK

BY
Michael Meik

ShipMaulaBaksh1976

The Maula Baksh. Picture taken by photographer Malcolm Cranfield on April 1, 1976 while the ship was on the Kiel Canal in Germany.

Over the last day or so, there were a couple of maritime post on the “I Want my Old Karachi Back” page. In keeping with the nautical theme, I decided to share my own family’s lengthy maritime connection, which I would like to share with our “Karachi Past and Present” readers . I have attached a couple of images of the Maula Baksh shown below. My Great Uncle (Grandfathers younger brother) Harold Meik was Captain of this ship. The ship was built in 1915 and was bought by the Baksh family to add to their fleet of general cargo ships for their company United Oriental Steam Ship Company based in West Wharf Karachi. With the Korean war in full swing, most shipping companies had boycotted those waters, and with China desperate for our cotton, the Baksh family seized the opportunity, and 1952 onwards, used the ship mainly for exporting cotton from Karachi to China, but also made regular jute runs from Dacca to Karachi. When the ship was eventually decommissioned it broken up at Gadani Beach in Karachi in June of 1981.

A little bit about Harold himself, he was born in Calcutta, West Bengal on Dec 7, 1899 to Lorenzo and Alice Meik. Big for his age at fifteen, in 1914 he signed up with the British Core of Royal Engineers as a sapper at the beginning of WWI. Although being in several perilous situations, he miraculously survived the war, but lost his cousin of the same name, who was taken prisoner in Belgium, where he died in custody on July 31, 1917. He was buried at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial Cemetery in Belgium along with nearly 55,000 other casualties of that war.

Harold’s father Lorenzo Alexander Meik (my Great Grandfather) who was born in 1846 in Calcutta, worked for The Asiatic Steamship Company aboard their cargo and passenger vessel the SS Maharani, which was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast Northern Ireland and completed on June 5, 1879. I have attached an image of the ship as well. The company sold the ship in 1927 to a Japanese cargo shipping company called Machida Shokai in Kobe. During WWII in 1941, the Japanese Government requisitioned the vessel as a military cargo ship, renaming it Boko Maru. On August 9, 1944, the US submarine Barbel torpedoed the ship and sank it just north of Okinoshima Japan.

After the war Harold went to school to become a Marine Engineer, and on graduating, joined the Merchant Marines. While still a student, just short of his 20th birthday, he married his childhood sweetheart Winnifred Joseph on November 17, 1919 in Kidderpore, Calcutta. Over the next several years, he joined a number of different cargo shipping companies always staying close to home because of his family, until he finally achieved the post of Captain in 1927. The image of him was taken on January 21, 1927 on board his vessel in Rangoon Burma. After partition he eventually came to work for the United Oriental Steam Ship Company, and in 1952 was handed over the Maula Baksh to Captain.

In 1957, he was to bring the Maula Baksh into Karachi port to their West Wharf location, where the ship was to undergo a transformation from steam to an oil burning vessel. Harold had never met his nephew (my Dad), also named Harold after him, and had found out that he was stationed at the Pakistan Air Force base in Mauripur. He radioed ahead, with a message for my Dad to pick him up from the docks, as he wanted to reconnect with the family. There was a warning in the message that he was an extremely large man and needed a big vehicle to transport him. Dad went looking for the largest taxi he could find, a 1955 Chevy. The Taxi driver was asking Dad “Saab who can be so large that you need such a big car?”, Then he saw Uncle Harry at nearly 350 lbs walking towards the taxi with dad, mom and my sister and brother, and told Dad, “Saab, yah to pura circus ah gia”. He managed to squeeze into the front seat with difficulty, so after that Dad would take one of the Air Force Dodge Power Wagons or a 1957 Chevy Cameo Pick Up truck to get him.

In 1961, he was on board the Maula Baksh on one the Jute runs, he had not been feeling well during the journey, so he called for his First Officer and told him if he were to die on board his ship, he wanted to be buried at sea. As the ship was pulling into Dacca Harbour, he passed away peacefully. in his sleep. They waited for his family to arrive the next day, and as per his final wishes they had his burial at sea.

My Dad himself in 1940 at the age of just sixteen ran away from school with his friend Seaton, they bluffed their ages and joined a British Navy minesweeper that patrolled the mouth of the Ulhas River near the Gateway of India, where they had laid down submarine nets to prevent German and Japanese submarines from entering the river systems. However, during an altercation with a senior British officer their actual ages came up in the investigation, and they were thrown out of the Navy. Dad immediately lied about his age again and joined the R.A.F., opting for Pakistan after partition., where he was with the P.A.F. until 1974.
