The Over Indulgence of Karachians!

By Anjum Khan

KhanAnjumSmall

Let’s face it .. we all love to go to the parties and gorge on yummy foods being served there..
But it is one thing to eat and enjoy the variety served and it’s completely the opposite to indulge in gluttony and waste food by filling plates upto the brim and not even finishing half of it.
What’s more people casually just go and keep their half eaten plate aside and get a new plate just so to see what other stuff served they could not stuff on their overly pilled plate at the first time, now they wanna taste what they could not indulge in earlier KAY KAHIN KUCH TASTE KIYE BINA REH NA JAI usper bhi they fill their plate like a mini mountain and leave the half eaten plate again aside and go back to their seats all smiling ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat “Jaisey Koi Bara Karnama Kerkey Arahey Hain”..
Even at that point their eyes rove around for chai .. “CHAI NAHI SERVE HORAHI ? TALAB HO RAHI HAI ,BOHAT KHA LIYA”they can be heard complaining ..🙄
If the above mention scenario is common to you then you exactly know what I am talking about.
Last time I went to a desi party in
NJ I saw something that I really liked, though some desis complained a lot about it ,”LO JEE,AB LOG HAMAIN DAL KEY DAIN GEY? “
The food was actually being served by the waiters standing behind the food tables by each serving container,
the people kept proceeding forward in a line .. this way I observed very lil was wasted as SAHARAM KEY MAREY no one dared asked the waiters to fill their plates upto the max.😁
Ofcourse this way the hotel management saved more food but atleast it did not got wasted !
I think this system should be used in Pakistani parties as well but I know it’s not gonna be implemented for the fear of being termed Kanjoos and having their guests offended.
Another good option would be to cut down on the number of food items served altogether.
Think about it ..on one hand our gareeb awam is getting grinded under the Mehengai problem A very small amount of people can afford to eat meat frequently in one month and some in only months, they r hardly making their ends meet, and on the other hand the rich are seen serving dozens of food dishes at their functions and lavish parties just so to show off their high standard and caliber to be one up in their community and friends.
Do u know 30/40 percentage of the food served is wasted half eaten in the plates and gets dumped into the garbage bin.
Jubkey hamara Mazhub hamai sakhti sey Rizq zaya kerney sey rokta hai …Throwing way food is considered as a big gunah..still some people keep doing it without feeling bad😕
It would be nice to have less number of dishes served in the dawat and use the rest of the money making a big hole in your pocket ,to distribute Ration among the poor, or give the money to any orphanage or help a poor persons child get through education or give a helping hand in getting a needy persons daughter getting married.. u know there r many ways one can sudhar one’s Deen and Dunya at the same time.
Pta nahi Hum kub seekhain gey ?

Having a car decorated for a wedding or Valima has now become part and parcel of wedding functions and its other related requisitions,
Gaari ko dulhan ki trah sajana for the baraat is a near compulsory thing now
Infact it’s taken as one the most important things on the Do list.
For the rich it’s no big deal.. but for the middle class Safaid posh people it has become a thing of prestige.
Baraat kisi achi si saji sajai gari mei laker jana has become an additional must kharcha on the poor souls.
After arranging the car from a friend or a family member ( if the dulhas car is not considered big or in good shape enough for the grand day )phir number ata hai usko sajwaney kay liye kisi achi si professional jaga dena.
Car decorating thing over the time has now become a full fledge business.
There r special places/shops opened for the task .. Pehley bhi theen but ab it has gone into a new dimension,
Internet per booking hoti hai
Designs select hota hai ,
Bhao Tao …Nahi hota .
Their rates are fixed because there is much more then just few strands of phooloon ki larayan thrown around the frame of the car.. The workers transform the car into a Complete work of art .
New Ideas r taken from the internet ofcourse and their charge is also done accordingly.
Have a look at the Dulhan ki tarah saji huwee cars and you’l know what I mean .
The selection of the floral designs chosen for application varies by the taste of the customer .. some like it over done, as u can see giving it quite a gaudy look 😁…yet some like it done within the norms of sophistication ☺️

Major John Crawford

By Dr. Adnan Zuberi

Goodbye, John
Major John Crawford, today has left for his heavenly abode. John was 92 and WW2 veteran, born in Paisley, Scotland. He was my next door neighbour and we had long association. Simple, nice and kind with typical militarily disciplined gentleman. Always ready to help with great sense of humor. Some 15 years ago,at birth of my son, John and his wife Kate, visited us. He left me flabbergasted and amazed when he said,میں اس بچہ کا داداہے
Then he revealed that he was first posted in Meerut (UP), India for few months then in Karachi. Major Crawford was stationed in karachi between 1944-1947. He was present and witnessed the ceremony of independence in Karachi on 14 August 1947. He shared his memories and talked about the sentiments of people on the day of independence. Today in his funeral service here in Hartlepool, one of his relative revealed that Major Crawford had served as special staff of last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten in Dehli before coming back to UK.
Once I said to him, John what a coincidence that first you posted in Meerut, a birthplace of my father. Then you stationed in my birth place, Karachi and now you are in Hartlepool, a birth place of my children.
Nothing last forever. Forever is a lie. All we have is what’s in between Hello and Goodbye.

For some time now I have been in touch with Sabrina Dawood and her team doing some back-end work in a small way on the history of Karachi, its places of interest, people and their contributions – its just a start but I think THE DAWOOD FOUNDATION “TDF GHAR” is an excellent initiative to archive the ‘beautiful stories” of our beloved city. Interest in this place is gaining momentum, there are organized tour-groups and visitors from everywhere; it is located in Amil Colony/Catholic Colony vicinity, off M.A. Jinnah Road, opp the Mausoleum and is open “everyday” from 10 am to 10 pm. It was great Sunday morning experience.

Nightingale of Pakistan

By
Anjum Khan
KhanAnjumSmPhoto

In my opinion she is the true Nightingale of Pakistan.. there is something so soothing so calm and yet so melodious about her style of singing that it makes the listener close his eyes and just enjoy her voice which is pure joy ..that’s the kind of impact she puts on the listening ears. (not) surprisingly her voice is equally good for ghazal , geet and semi classical at the same time and she has proved this time and again.
Very few know that Nayara jees dad was in an active member of All India Muslim League, he hosted Qayad e Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on his
trip to Assam.
Born in Gawatti Assam in 1950 Nayara’s family didn’t move to Pakistan till 1957/58.. Her dad joined the family much much later , he stayed back to look after the immovable property in Assam.
Nayara grew up hearing bhajans and Thumris of Akhtari begum on radio as a child,And let me tell you here she didn’t have any formal training in music she was just blessed with good vocals.
Starting her carrier from Pakistan television in the early 70s Nayara’s voice was heard and noticed immediately by the filmy music pundits then and so they offered her to sing for films
Before i go naming all her lovely songs which will definitely zoom you back in your own memory lane .. let’s talk a bit about how she actually entered this field .
Tu jenaab It so happened that she was heard singing for her friends and teachers at the annual dinner at the National college of Arts in Lahore, it was around 1968 A professor liked her voice so much that he recommended her name to take part in the university’s radio Pakistan program back in 1968 and she started taking part in that program on quite regular basis singing songs, which later helped her to go on television and then enter films and…
the rest is history ,
All said and done on the history of her SUR KA SAFAR..now let’s move to the best part ..☺️
Jee., names of some of her super hit numbers over the time period from 1971-2012 .
☀️Tera Saya Jehan Bhi Ho Sajna (1973)
Film Gharana
☀️Aj Ghum Hai Tu Kia …(1973)
film Mastana.
☀️Bol ri gurya bol Zara (1973)Film Aas
☀️Tu hi bta Pagli pawan (1974) film
Phool merey gulshan ka
☀️itna bhi na chaho mujhey (1974)
film Parda na uthao
☀️Ik ajnabi chehrey sey mulaqaat huwee hai..film Baghi haseena
☀️MAYSAM tu dewana hai 1975
Film Do Sathi
☀️Tera piyar bunkey aya Film bhool
☀️Kuch log mohabat ka Sila.. Film
Gumrah.
☀️Roothay ho tum , tumko kaisey manaoo piya.. 1977 film Aina. And
☀️Mujhey dil sey na bhulana.
She has sung som really cool non filmi ghazals dad well,
I love her ,
☀️Jalay tu jalao gori ( Ibne Insha )
☀️Aai Ishq hamain Barbaad na ker,
And her ever so famous,
Ai jazba e dil gar mei chahoon
(Behzad Lakhnavi )
And that lovely patriotic song jisko sun ker our heart melts for the love of our nation.
☀️Watan ki mitti gawa rehna.
And last but not the least those who remember Sahira Kazmi’s TEESRA KINARA .. they can never forget that beautiful beautiful song,
☀️Kabhi hum khobsoorat they..👍🏼
Winner of 5 Nigar awards For some reason Nayara stoped singing after 2012 …even though we have so many of her songs to cherish for life
Yet her fans would love her to resume back her singing.
Non the less we wish her all the best
Nayara is Married to the famous actor Shaheryar Zaidi ( who used to also sing with her in the 1970s Gup Shup) so obviously music runs in the blood of her two sons,
Her younger son Jaffer Zaidi is the lead vocalist for the music band KAVISH ,while her eldest one Naad e Ali has already started his debut as a solo singer.

Hasina Moin

By
Anjum Khan
KhanAnjumSmPhoto

If you were a youngster in the 70s in Pakistan than you definitely grew up watching Hasina Moins Tv plays..
My earliest recall list includes her ever so famous ..Shehzori , uncle Urfi and Zer Zabar Paish , (incidentally they all had the good looking actor Shakeel (our blue eyed handsome dude from Karachi) as the lead hero H.M’s Perchayan was the first colored television play aired from Ptv in the 70s) with the young and beautiful couple Sahira and Rahat Kazmi as lead,Just like Shakil’s popularity bagged him yet another Hasina ji’s masterpiece in the 80s Called Ankahi Rahat Kazmis killer handsome looks also made her vote for him once again as the lead hero in Dhoop kinarey in the 90s and.. He proved her right, cause even after two whole decades he still managed looked so dashing and handsome.
Do u know Hasina Moin was the first ever Pakistani tv play writer in the 70’s who wrote an original script for a TV series ..( Kiran Kahani)
“Is sey pehley sirf novels per kahaniyan bunti theen!
Thanks to mr Mohsin Ali who encouraged her to go for the new experiment .. and it clicked instantly.
Yehan I must add the audience really loved the character of Dr Salman played by the handsome mr Manzoor Qureshi as the hero in the play😊
One thing was very obvious in most of Hasina Moins dramas ..they were pakkay heroin orientated plays..👌🏼
Girl power and girls rule was her thing or it looked, but in a very good fashionly manner I’d say. This dominating feature in some of her dramas may look odd to some but eventually her heroins got tamed and they jumped off the high horse soon as they found their love in the play (much to the relief of some seriously concerned viewers 😄)
H.M’s list of hit plays is pretty impressive .. each bagged its due applause in abundance from its viewers ..After the 70s,Shehzori, Kiran Kahani, Uncle Urfi, Zer Zabar Pesh, and Perchayan,The 80 and the 90/s and the so on eras brought us some unforgettable hits like ( in random order).. Bandish,Tanhayaan,Ankahi,
Dhund, Dhoop kinarey, Ahat, Kasak,Kohar,Des perdes, Tarey aajaney sey, kaisa yeh janoon, Dhundle rastay,
Padosi,Tansen, and Dastak r just to name a few that stole its viewers hearts every time.. even when they were on repeat telecast.
Remember In the 80s people bought whole sets Video cassettes and later CDs of their choice of Hasina Moins famous drama series, just so to enjoy it at their own time with families and friends.😁.. (I still have the whole set of Ankahi and Dhoop kinarey with us☺️)
Another thing ..Jo bhi aj tak Hasina Moin ki tv serials ki heroin bani ,bus …woh tu chaa gain sub key dilon pay ..that kind of strong character she always penned.👌🏼
From Nilofer Abbasi( shehzori) to Late,Roohi Bano ( Kiran Kahani& Zer zabar Paish) , to Sahira kazmi ( Parchyan) to Shahla Ahmed (Uncle Urfi) to Shahnaz Sheikh (Unkahi & Tanhayan) to late Khalida Riyasat ( Bandish, Dhundh and Parosi) to Zeba Bakhtiyar (Tansen )
to Sania Saeed ( Ahat)
to Marina khan (Tanhayian, Dhoop kinarey Kohar and Parosi) to Nadia khan
( pal do pal and Des Perdes) and …so many more!!
Hasina M also has many tele films and Eid plays to her credit ..
Plus she inked prominent films like Zeba bhaktiyars “Henna”and Usmam peerzadas “yeh Nazdeekian” along with a few more.
Honestly Hasina jee u have quite a large number of feathers on your cap .. masha Allah sey ..❤️👏🏼👏🏼!!!
What more to add ..except that as your fans, HasinaJee, we are all eyes for yet another powerful hamgama khais play (as per your riwayat )hopefully its on
way 💕

McLeod Road Renamed

By
Dr. Sohail Ansari
AnsariSohail2018

Fifty years ago, this day on 9th November 1969, KMC renamed McLeod Road. The original McLeod Road was named after John McLeod who was the Deputy Collector of Customs. It changed to become Ismail Ibrahim (I. I.) Chundrigar Road after Mr. Chundrigar who was the prime minister of Pakistan in 1957. Once upon a time the road and streets around were regularly washed with water. McLeod Road gained fame as the ‘Wall Street of Pakistan’.

Alamgir of Karachi

By
Anjum Khan
KhanAnjumSmPhoto

Right from his “Daikha Na Tha” song on television with the Turkish singer Nazi In 1975 The then 20 year old managed to win the hearts of the young of that era on the spot.
But as some of you might know the story of Alamgirs music journey in Pakistan did not start from there.
It was way before that, when he decided to come to Pakistan before even he could finish his college in Cadet college Tangail in Bangladesh,
Our Karachi in those days was like Mumbai of India .. being a great cosmopolitan city that it was People came with stars in their eyes in quest to Pursue their dreams here and Alamgir was no different either ..imagine that was the kind of reputation our City of lights had then, (I am not disheartened it will rise again I know.. sigh.)
Any ways, coming back to Alamgir he literary came with just few a taakas (Bangladeshi currency)in his pocket,a guitar in his hand (as his only prized possession) and ofcourse with lots hopes and dreams in his heart to make a big name in music here.
He settled in the PECHS area in those days and used to sit and sing at odd places almost like a street singer, he also used to amuse the customers at the famous CAFE D’KHAN resturant at Tariq road in those days singing what ever songs he knew then and in returned was promised free meals.. and mind you ..not money!
One day Khush Bakht Shujaat saw him there, She liked his voice and asked him to come to the studios ..
You can well imagine the excitement running through the adrenals of the young singer then but not for long, upon entering her studio room he learnt she had already booked some one else for her show FEROZAN ,
That hit him very bad but before He could turn back to singing for free meals again Lady Luck immediately fetched Sohail Rana to the rescue,He happened to be sitting in the next door studio room ,and heard the pling plangs notes on his guitar , he asked him if
he was interested in being the guitarist for his kids music program and any guess what was Alamgir’s response ? Ofcourse he jumped to the offer!
and that’s how he he entered the formal world of music on our small screen… after that there was no turning back .. he bagged an instant applaud in his DAIKHNA NA THA song which became an instant rage from the music programe SUNDAY KEY SUNDAY,
His dancing singing ability on the screen which was something different was embraced with open arms by the young .
After that came ALBELA RAHI which was a remake of a foreign song it also became an instant hit then.
lets just say ALAMGIR became the singing sensation or the first pop singer for the young then,he relates himself as a pupil of AHMED RUSHDI though.
Youth of that era used to find him sitting near “JHEEL PARK”in Karachi along with his red Sedan car and a guitar.. finding immense pleasure entertaining the young group around him, Music was his life support his passion his everything good and it showed.
The cassette shops in the 80s sold Alamgir’s albums like hot cakes !
That’s was his time to shine out ..
I remember I was in college then
Me and my friends just loved to hear all his songs infact we knew them all by heart.
Kon kon sey songs yad kerwaoon..
It’s a long list and missing on any one would be not fair ..☺️

Even after spending 45 plus years in the field of music he is still associated with his first passion music.
Though he has been very sick battling his Kidney problem for long now
He is Currently settled in Canada and is
still undergoing treatment I hear.
He came back to Pakistan in between in 2012 and did few shows on TV for his fans who grew up with him ..Yet he had to go back to continue his treatment.
